Grasses developed in Tifton by Glenn Burton, have increased cattle production in Georgia and across the world. Mr. Burton was given the National Medal of Science in 1983 at the White House for his grass breeding activities. It has been estimated that Tifton grasses cover ten million acres of golf courses in the south alone.

According to 2000 Census, the City of Tifton had a population of 15,060 persons. Between 1990 and 2000, the city experienced a population increase of 5.9%, compared to the state growth during this period of 26.4%.

Tifton is a Georgia Municipal Association "City of Excellence", a Georgia City of Ethics, and a 2006 Georgia Department of Community Affairs "Signature City". 

Tifton is also known nationally as the "Reading Capital of the World".
